Trees are beautiful components of the landscape, providing shade, oxygen, and aesthetic appeal. But when a tree is dying, it can pose serious safety risks, as weak or decaying branches are more likely to fall. Early detection of a tree's declining health can help prevent damage to your property and allow for the possibility of treatment. At Pete & Ron’s Tree Service, we can identify dying trees, and then determine the appropriate course of action. Here are four warning signs that a tree may be dying.

Dead or Decaying Branches

Dead branches are a clear indication that the tree is struggling. You might also notice that some branches are entirely bare of leaves. Branches that snap off easily when lightly touched, or that show signs of rot or fungus, suggest the tree may be losing its ability to nourish itself properly. If dead branches become widespread, the entire tree might be compromised.

Sparse or Discolored Leaves

One of the earliest and most obvious signs of a tree in distress is changes in its foliage. If you notice the tree's leaves are becoming sparse, discolored, or falling off during the growing season, it may indicate that the tree may be diseased and/or lacking nutritional intake.

Cracks in the Trunk

Visible cracks or deep splits in the tree’s trunk are significant warning signs of internal damage. Trees with large cracks are more vulnerable to breaking, especially during high winds or storms. Cracking often occurs when the structural integrity of the tree has been weakened by disease, rot, or pests. If you spot extensive or deep cracks, it’s important to have the tree evaluated by the arborist to determine whether it can be saved.

Fungal Growth

The presence of fungi, particularly mushrooms growing at the base of the tree or along the trunk, is a red flag for internal decay. Fungi thrive on dead and decaying wood, which means that the tree may be rotting from the inside. This kind of decay can significantly weaken the structure of the tree and often indicates that the tree is nearing the end of its life.
