Call the Arborist if Notice Any of these 4 General Signs of Tree Disease

Pete & Ron’s Tree Service • 6 December 2024

Healthy trees provide shade, beauty, and environmental benefits. However, trees are susceptible to diseases that can weaken their health and structure. Identifying signs of disease early can prevent damage from spreading and protect the tree’s health. At Pete & Ron’s Tree Service, we can identify diseased trees and determine whether they can be saved or should be safely removed. Here are four general signs that may indicate your tree is suffering from a disease.

Discolored or Wilting Leaves

Healthy trees maintain vibrant, well-hydrated leaves throughout their growing season. If you notice leaves turning yellow, brown, or black outside of their normal seasonal changes, it could indicate a disease. Wilted leaves, curling at the edges, and premature leaf drop are also concerning. These symptoms may be caused by fungal infections or bacterial diseases.

Cracks or Cankers on the Trunk

The trunk is the central support system of a tree, and its condition is a strong indicator of overall health. Large cracks or open wounds can expose the tree to infection and decay. Cankers, which are sunken or dead areas of bark, often result from fungal diseases. These symptoms weaken the tree’s structural integrity and can eventually lead to limb failure.

Abnormal Growths or Fungal Presence

Fungal growth is one of the clearest signs of tree disease. Mushrooms growing at the base or on the trunk may indicate internal decay. Galls, which are unusual growths on branches or stems, can also be caused by fungal or bacterial infections. While not all fungal activity is fatal, it’s a sign that the tree may be under stress.

Dieback in Branches

When branches begin to die from the tips inward, it’s a condition known as dieback. This issue often results from vascular diseases that restrict nutrient flow. Dead branches may appear brittle and devoid of leaves, even during the growing season. If not addressed, dieback can spread, threatening the health and stability of the entire tree.
